Art that Records History #1This is a painting by Casper Weisgerber showing Betsy Ross showing the first flag to some of the forefathers of our nation. The painting is capturing the historic birth of the US flag, and the creation and sewing of the flag itself was a great artwork.
Controversial Art Piece #1: Gate, Angela Singer2006 recycled taxidermy, mixed media 90 x 210 x 80 mm
Angela Singer uses the carcasses of dead animals as the base material for her artwork. She is an animal rights activist who hopes to raise awareness on the gruesome nature of killing animals for art (deer heads on walls, etc) by exaggerating the effect. Other pieces, using false blood and terrified-looking jeweled eyes on the carcasses, are even more disturbing than Gate, the piece pictured here. Her art is controversial because many people see it as unnecessarily painful to view and exploitative of the very animals she is trying to protect.

In 2006 after complaints from shocked customers these McDonalds urinals were removed. Two years earlier Virgin Atlantic removed a similar set of urinals from John F. Kennedy airport in New York after complaints that the designs were unfriendly to women.
